What is the DOT Physical?

DOT (The department of transportation) has defined guidelines to ensure that the driver of a commercial motor vehicle is in good health to operate for their safety as well as the public. This exam is only provided by a qualified provider mandated by the Federal Motor carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It is due to be renewed every 24 months or less on a case by case basis.

What are the main components of a DOT Exam?

The examination is comprehensive and includes:

Hearing: Drivers should be able to hear a force whisper voice test at a distance of 5 feet or more with or without hearing aids or a hearing loss of less than 40db via audiometry

Vision: drivers should have a visual acuity of at least 20/40 in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, but can meet the standard with only one eye, and at least 70 degree of peripheral vision along the horizontal meridian

Urinalysis: This is important for screening other underlying condition that may impact safety driving such as diabetes

Physical Examination: This includes vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and various body systems including lungs, neurology, spines and muscle,circulatory, digestive and more

How to Prepare For Your DOT Physical

Before arriving for a DOT physical, the driver must gather important information such as 

  1. A valid driver’s license

  2. List of past surgeries and medical condition

  3. A list of medications

  4. List of any allergies

  5. Health information that will help to speed up the process such as: A clearance from a specialist such as a cardiologist or a Nephrologist, a copy of stress test or echocardiogram, ITDM form for diabetic patient treated with insulin, a most recent A1C reading, and medical exemptions forms such as hearing, vision, etc

For sleep apnea you must bring a printed compliance of 70% or more of night using CPAP for at least 4 hours each of those night

Upon completing the physical exam, the required physical health form will be completed and the driver will be certified for 2 years or less based on health status.
